Two Weeks Notice Letter: 5 Samples You Can Send Today (2026)

A two weeks notice letter is the standard American way to resign: a short, dated message that names your last day, two weeks out. The document itself is simple; most of the anxiety around it comes from questions the letter does not need to answer (why you are leaving, whether they will be upset, what happens next). Below are five samples for the common situations, plus the practical questions everyone asks about counting the days.

How to count the two weeks

Give notice on any weekday, and your last day is fourteen calendar days later, typically the Friday of the second week. Handing notice on a Friday afternoon makes your last day a Friday, which is the cleanest for payroll and handovers. Two weeks means ten working days; holidays inside the window still count toward the fourteen calendar days unless your contract says otherwise. If you have unused vacation, ask HR whether it is paid out or must be taken inside the notice period; do not assume.

1. The standard two weeks notice

Subject: Two Weeks Notice – [Your Name]

Dear [Manager’s name],

Please accept this letter as my formal two weeks notice of resignation from my position as [job title] at [company]. My last day of work will be [date].

Thank you for the opportunities during my time here. Over the next two weeks I will complete my current work, document what is in progress, and help transition my responsibilities.

Best regards,
[Your name]

2. The brief version

The minimum viable notice. Perfectly professional.

Subject: Two Weeks Notice – [Your Name]

Dear [Manager’s name],

I am resigning from my position as [job title], with my last day on [date], two weeks from today.

Thank you for everything. I will make sure my work is handed over cleanly before I go.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

3. The grateful version

Subject: Two Weeks Notice – [Your Name]

Dear [Manager’s name],

I am writing to give my two weeks notice; my last day at [company] will be [date].

I want to say plainly that this role has been good to me. Working on [project or team] taught me [skill or lesson], and I have appreciated your support throughout. Leaving was a hard call.

My priority for the next two weeks is a smooth handover: I will document my projects, brief the team, and be available for questions until my last day.

With thanks,
[Your name]

4. The hourly / shift work version

Shift schedules make the handover paragraph different: coverage matters more than documentation.

Subject: Two Weeks Notice – [Your Name]

Dear [Manager’s name],

This letter is my two weeks notice of resignation from my position as [job title]. My last shift will be on [date].

I am scheduled through [date] and will work all of my remaining shifts. If it helps with coverage, I am open to adjusting my final schedule within these two weeks.

Thank you for the opportunity to work here.

[Your name]

5. The new-opportunity version

Names the reason in one neutral line.

Subject: Two Weeks Notice – [Your Name]

Dear [Manager’s name],

Please accept this as my formal two weeks notice; my last day will be [date]. I have accepted a position at another company and start there later this month.

I am grateful for what I have learned here and will do everything I can to leave my work in good shape, including full documentation and handover of my open projects.

Best regards,
[Your name]

Delivering it well

Tell your manager in a short conversation first, then send the email immediately after so there is a dated record. Keep the conversation to one line (“I have decided to move on; my last day will be the 15th”) and let the letter carry the formality. Expect one of three responses (acceptance, a counteroffer, or being walked out same-day, which happens in some industries regardless of your notice) and decide in advance how you would answer a counteroffer, so you do not negotiate on the spot.

For situations beyond the standard case (immediate departures, personal reasons, retirement, remote logistics), our full resignation letter guide has eight samples covering each one.

Frequently asked questions

Is a two weeks notice letter legally required?

In most US states, no; at-will employment means either side can end the relationship without notice. It remains the professional standard because it protects your references, your final pay logistics, and your reputation in an industry that talks. If your contract specifies a notice period, that governs instead.

Can my employer end my employment before the two weeks are up?

Yes, in at-will states an employer can accept your resignation effective immediately. Some pay out the notice period anyway; some do not. If you depend on the two weeks of pay, do not spend it before it lands, and get any early-release agreement in writing.

Should I give more than two weeks?

For senior roles, long-tenured positions, or jobs with complex handovers, three to four weeks is a generous and remembered gesture, if you can afford it. Do not exceed what you can sustain: a distracted month helps nobody.

Two weeks notice or resignation letter, which do I need?

They are the same document; “two weeks notice” is the version whose notice period is two weeks. If your last day is further out (or immediate), call it a resignation letter and state the date. Either way, the essential content is identical: the fact you are leaving and the date.

If your job hunt has you sending the same emails repeatedly (applications, thank-yous, follow-ups), CMDK turns them into Gmail snippets with fill-in variables, and adds read receipts so you know when they were opened, for $79 a year with a 15-day free trial.
